Press release / Opal Lingerie raises £250 for PAC

Press release issued for Frome lingerie boutique, Opal

A Somerset lingerie boutique which stocks specialist underwear for those who have undergone a mastectomy has helped fund a local charity providing cancer support

Opal lingerie on Frome’s Catherine Hill introduced post mastectomy wear to the shop a year ago and has raised £250 for Positive Action on Cancer (PAC) which provides a free local professional counselling service for anyone affected by a cancer diagnosis.

Shop owner Randa Bott has contributed a percentage of each mastectomy bra sale towards the charity; and has also received donations from many of Opal’s customers.

“Introducing this range of lingerie has resulted in such a positive outcome.  Most women are touched by breast cancer in some way and I’m really pleased that in helping those who’ve undergone a mastectomy, we’re also able to provide support for such a fantastic local charity” commented Mrs Bott.

After opening Opal in September 2007, Mrs Bott was inspired to include prosthesis wear in the shop, when she became aware that a similar service was not available locally for those who had suffered from breast cancer.

She has since introduced many new lines of mastectomy underwear, including swimwear, to offer her customers the opportunity to purchase bras that aren’t just practical, but also fashion-influenced.

Mrs Bott added:  “I’ve had visits from so many women who have had a mastectomy and then found themselves at a loss as to where to go to find advice on and buy a bra.  Both can be crucial in helping women to regain their confidence and feel good about their appearance again.”

“The good news is that women now don’t have to settle for second-best when buying a prosthesis bra – there are many beautifully-made lines available.”

Rosie Eliot from Positive Action on Cancer said:

‘We are delighted with this very generous donation from Opal Lingerie.  It is the small, but steady effort made by people such as Randa that helps to keep this charity running so successfully and enable the people of Frome to take advantage of the free counselling service we provide.’

Encouraging figures released by Cancer Research UK this week showed the number of women dying from breast cancer to have fallen to a record low; dipping under 12,000 a year for the first time since records began.

About Positive Action on Cancer: (PAC)
PAC is a free professional one-to-one counselling service for anyone affected by a cancer diagnosis.  This includes family, friends and carers as well as cancer patients.  The charity also offers counselling for people bereaved by cancer.

PAC was founded in 1994 in response to the need to support people affected by cancer and obtained charity status in 1995.  The service is offered free because of the financial impact on families when a member has been diagnosed with cancer.  PAC relies on grants, fundraising and donations to be able to continue to provide this service.
