When a Wiltshire business owner picked up the phone to a martial arts academy, he had no idea it would lead to a black belt in health and business.

After using martial arts to beat his diabetes in just over a month, Martin Killian from Westbury hopes to encourage others to do the same. He now trains in Tamashii – a martial arts programme designed to teach de-stressing, fitness, toning and practical self defence.

The managing director of Hilton Vending on the West Wilts Trading Estate says he is no longer insulin dependent, after committing to a training programme at Westbury’s Black Belt Zone Fitness Academy.

After starting his training 59-year-old Martin says he has since lost more than four stone and gained a lot of business motivation. He hopes that his experience will help to inspire others.

“Committing to losing weight and becoming much fitter and healthier has brought about a massive personal change of approach” explained Martin, who now trains with local Master Tony Preston four times a week in Tamashii, a martial arts style that includes Shotokan Karate and Korean kickboxing.

“I’ve benefited from a noticeable difference in productivity levels too – both in running my business and in my personal life.

“My concentration levels have also improved and I find I can now cope much better with stress. The last year of martial arts training really has changed my life completely.”

Martin decided to contact Black Belt Fitness when he realised his weight was continuing to escalate and his health deteriorate. He began a healthier diet regime last January, before starting his martial arts training in May. A month later, he no longer needed to use insulin to manage his diabetes.
