Press release / Advice on handling anger and stress at work

Press release issued on behalf of Beating Anger Bath

Two in three people are affected by anger in the workplace and the cost to businesses is growing.

A local expert will hold a free workshop in Frome next month, to help people better handle stressful situations and understand the behaviour of those around them.

The two-hour session will look at the various triggers of anger and the ways in which it can be expressed.  Those who attend will receive advice from anger specialist Mark Urry on how best to manage the build up and communication of this emotion.

“Stress and anger can have a serious impact on the bottom line of a business” explained Mark, director of Beating Anger Bath.

“Left unmanaged and unresolved, the build up of emotion and potential for conflict in the workplace can lead to stress, depression and loss both of productivity and employees, who were otherwise an asset to the company.”

The Communicating Anger and Emotion workshop will be held at The Old Church School in Frome on the 1st June.

Mark added that there are certain expectations of work-related behaviour; anger isn’t one of these, which means people can often demonstrate passive-aggression.

“This is where everyone pretends to get along, but behind the scenes there are unresolved issues which can lead to back stabbing, undermining behaviours and ultimately profit loss.

“The good news is that there are many ways in which this can be tackled and situations turned around. But, as anger is still a society taboo, it’s a feeling which is often left unchallenged and therefore not managed.”

Recent figures released by the Health and Safety Commission revealed that out of 33 million days lost to illness, 13.4 million were attributable to stress, anxiety or depression.  The number of people suffering work related stress has doubled in the last 10 years.

Mark underwent extensive training and qualified with the British Association of Anger Management.  He stresses that it is a natural and healthy feeling, which can be controlled.  His courses and workshops aim to help individuals to understand their emotions better, to improve the quality of their working and personal lives.
